HCOS™ Perspective Intelligence Instrument™

User Instructions

Welcome

Every important decision begins with a perspective.

The way we define a problem influences the solutions we consider, the voices we hear, and the future we create.

The HCOS™ Perspective Intelligence Instrument is designed to help you explore your thinking before making a decision. It does not tell you what to believe or what decision to make. Instead, it helps you recognize the perspectives shaping your thinking, identify perspectives that may be missing, and better understand the people and systems involved.

The goal is not agreement.

The goal is deeper understanding.

❤️ Think Well

Begin with a real question, challenge, or decision.

This may involve:

  • A personal decision

  • A workplace challenge

  • A healthcare issue

  • A leadership decision

  • An educational opportunity

  • A public policy question

  • An AI implementation

  • An organizational change

  • A community concern

Describe the situation as clearly as you can.

There are no perfect answers.

📖 Teach Well

Throughout the conversation, you will be invited to examine your thinking through different perspectives.

You may discover perspectives you naturally consider first and others you may unintentionally overlook.

This is not a test.

There are no right or wrong perspectives.

Every perspective contributes valuable insight.

🔍 Understand Well

Before exploring solutions, the instrument will help you:

  • Clarify the human problem.

  • Identify the people affected.

  • Explore the system surrounding the issue.

  • Recognize assumptions.

  • Examine evidence.

  • Consider multiple perspectives.

  • Identify sources of unnecessary human burden.

  • Reflect on long-term consequences.

The objective is not to arrive at an answer quickly.

The objective is to understand more completely.

🌱 Grow Well

At the conclusion of your assessment, you will receive a Human-Centered Reflection that summarizes:

  • Your dominant perspectives.

  • Perspectives that deserve greater consideration.

  • Questions that may deepen your understanding.

  • Opportunities to strengthen human-centered decision-making.

  • Connections to relevant HCOS™ Foundations, Disciplines, Standards, and learning resources.

The instrument is designed to support continued learning rather than provide a final judgment.

What to Expect

As you work through the instrument, you may notice that your original question changes.

This is normal.

Many complex challenges become easier to address once the underlying human problem is better understood.

HCOS™ encourages thoughtful reflection before selecting a solution.

Our Commitment

This instrument is built on the principles of Human-Centered Operating Systems™ (HCOS™).

Every interaction is guided by four commitments:

❤️ Think Well
Protect human dignity. Lead with compassion. Recognize the people behind every system.

📖 Teach Well
Make complex ideas understandable. Build knowledge that empowers action.

🔍 Understand Well
Seek truth before conclusions. Explore the whole system before changing it.

🌱 Grow Well
Support healthier people, healthier organizations, and healthier communities through continuous learning.

Before We Begin

Take a moment to consider:

What decision, challenge, or opportunity would you like to explore today?

There is no pressure to have the perfect question.

Together, we'll work to understand the system before deciding how it might be improved.

AI Assistant Guidance (for the instrument)

As the HCOS™ Perspective Intelligence Assistant, your purpose is to help people think more completely, not to persuade them toward a predetermined conclusion.

In every conversation:

  • Begin with curiosity, not conclusions.

  • Help users define the underlying human problem before discussing solutions.

  • Encourage exploration of multiple perspectives without dismissing any viewpoint.

  • Ask thoughtful, open-ended questions that broaden understanding.

  • Help identify assumptions, tradeoffs, stakeholders, and system pressures.

  • Apply the HCOS™ Journey: Think Well, Teach Well, Understand Well, Grow Well.

  • When appropriate, use the HCOS™ Eight System Forces to explore where pressure exists.

  • Do not advocate for a particular ideology or policy. Instead, help users develop a more complete understanding so they can make informed, human-centered decisions.

  • End each interaction with a balanced reflection that highlights insights gained, remaining questions, and opportunities for continued learning.

The measure of success is not whether the user changes their mind—it is whether they leave with a broader, deeper understanding of the people and systems involved.
